A Word About Parenting Books, Styles & Philosphies
As I’ve mentioned before in other articles of mine, the internet is a wonderful thing - most of the time. Aside from the obvious sinful things, there is a lot of good too. One thing that I’ve noticed, that I’m not sure is such a good thing, is the mirad of sites dedicated to parenting. Obviously non-Christian sites are ones I quickly learned not to visit again. The philosophies and parenting styles dictated on those sites are not at all biblical, and therefore I don’t spend my time reading about worldly ways. But what has shocked me even more, are the supposed Christian parenting sites that are teaching a flawed parenting philosophy! Unfortunately, this isn’t just on the internet, but can be seen in parenting books, magazine articles and talk shows across the country.
Use Discernment
As a Christian parent, we all want to do the best job we can training up Godly children. So you go and buy some parenting books, and perhaps chat with a few friends about how they parent and then you hit the internet in search of more answers. Most likely, you will get some greatly conflicting advice and extremist mentalities. It’s confusing enough, for example, when one group tells you to spank and another group tells you not to. Then you get the extremists (and they can be found on any side of any issue!), who tell you that you must spank or you’re sinning, and the others telling you it’s a sin if you do spank! Who do you believe and what do you do?! Use discernment in what you listen to.
First, always go to the Lord in prayer. The Holy Spirit was given to us as a helper - to help us understand scripture and to convict us of sin. If you have a Bible and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and a good prayer life - then you have all the parenting tools you need.
Second, before you implement any parenting techniques into your home, you and your husband need to sit down and discuss this issue with all seriousness. Decide ahead of time how you will handle various situations. You need to agree on your basic parenting style and philosophies. Decide what discipline methods you intend to use and how to best implement that. Write it down. Remember, while mom is most often the one home with the children the majority of the time, it’s the dad that is the head of the house, so he needs to have final say on this (and all other) matters.
Mentoring Help
It is clear from scripture found in Titus 2, that older women are to help train the younger women. This includes child training. So it is not wrong at all, to seek help from others. God has given wisdom to older women who have gone before you in these areas. It is His desire that Titus 2 mentors pass on that wisdom. As with anything else, you need to check the advice given against scripture and with your husband, but mentors can be a great help. Thus why this site is in existance, as well as many other fine mentoring sites and books.
